ALL Golden: Kids 9 & Up
Bailey Bymyside:
Golden Lessons for Life
This book was written by Patricia Burlin
Kennedy, illustrated by Robert Christie and published by the Howell Book House in October
2000. This book is made up of short but very meaningful observations that celebrate a
Golden's wisdom and charm. And, it is accompanied by illustrations that will truly touch
the hearts of Golden lovers.
Why Goldens Do That: A Collection of
Curious Golden Retriever Behaviors
Golden Retrievers are very special dogs with equally special traits and
characteristics that set them uniquely apart from other (some would say,
"lesser") dogs. This book aims to answer all of the questions golden owners
wonder about this breed, such as: Why do Goldens have such long hair that sheds
so much? Why do Goldens look like they're smiling? Why do Goldens eat grass? Why
do they love to play, and why do they make such good service dogs? These and 35
other interesting Golden behaviors are lightheartedly and thoroughly explained
in this fun and insightful volume. The text is illustrated with stunning color
photographs of the various behaviors. The author is Tom Davis, who has been
living with and writing about dogs for 30 years. He has written several Golden
books and is an editor for several magazines including Sporting Classics and
Pointing Dog Journal.
Miss
Kitty Mysteries: The Pearl Necklace (May 2006)
This book was written by Michael Faulkner, an artist, educator and
American Kennel Club dog show judge. It takes you into the
mysterious and often humorous lives of Miss Kitty the Beautiful
Golden Retriever, Alice Jane The One-Eyed Pug, Bill the Bull, Lewis
the Cat, Rustle the Parrot and many other delightful animal
characters. Faulkner's page turning story comes to life through his
own rich illustrations to create a charming story filled with
action, suspense, forgiveness and love. Who took the Pearl Necklace
and why? Here is an excerpt from page one:
Rolling on my side, then on my back, I find just the right spot for
my tired furry body. “Miss Kitty, Miss Kitty,” I hear someone call.
Lifting my head, with my ears to the wind, I hear nothing. I wait—no
one calls. No one whistles. It must be a dream. As I settle back
down on my bed, I begin to wonder why a beautiful, strong,
intelligent Golden, who looks nothing like a cat, is called Miss
Kitty. Some say my mother hated cats and I was named after one, so I
would love them. Well…it worked. I like cats very much.
Uncle
Looker and the Hurricane (August 2003)
This book was written by Patricia J. Thebo,, who in the early
1990’s, as a member of a Golden Retriever club, founded a Golden
Retriever Rescue in the State of Michigan. Uncle Looker and the
Hurricane is a delightful children's book about the true adventures
of two Golden Retrievers, Looker and Hurricane. The book teaches
children the importance of true friendship and caring. Through good
times and love Uncle Looker shows Hurri the joys of life.
This delightful hardcover children’s book features over 50 photos
and illustrations. Looker ( aka “Sunfire Oh What a Mugshot”) and as
you will discover, Hurricane (aka “Glenbrook Force Twelve”) are
Golden Retrievers and very good friends. The book and story began
when Hurricane arrived in Pat’s arms at the house, and Looker was
there ……waiting! When Looker saw Hurricane for the first time it was
very clear that Hurricane was brought home just for Looker. She
would always be Looker’s. “We cataloged this amazing friendship and
tried to capture some of the joy and tenderness that these two
lovely Golden's have allowed us to share”, Pat says. Looker and
Hurricane tell their story of life and fun as only they can. They
experience swimming, running, ”gardening”, snow, a birthday,
“cookies”, making faces, squirrel watch, mischief, and HUGS.
My Name Is Rufus: I Am a Photographer (May 2004)
Evoking a dog's-eye view of the world, this heartwarming photo journal and
tribute chronicles the life of a special golden retriever, Rufus, from
his days as an abandoned pet to those as a beloved "dog" photographer.
Together Rufus and his owner travel the surrounding neighborhood, and,
with camera strapped to his collar, Rufus "snaps" photos of his pals and
the people, places, and things that he finds of particular interest
during his daily jaunts. The often humorous photos and accompanying
narrative capture the reactions the other dogs and humans have to the
dog photographer and present Rufus's favorite beaches, parks, and city
scenes from a uniquely different perspective. Dog lovers in particular
will identify with the remarkable bond of trust and loyalty that dog and
owner had for each other. The author, Reiji Kanemoto, is a commercial
photographer. He has become an advocate for dog rescue efforts and is
training another adoptee, a Black Labrador, to carry on Rufus's work.
The Summer of
Riley
This book was written by Eve Bunting and was published in May 2001
by Joanna Cotler. "Maybe that's one of the reasons people get dogs, to kind of close
up the empty places inside them." Eleven-year-old William never needed a friend more
than now. After his parents' separation, his father's new engagement, and his
grandfather's dying without any warning -- adopting big, beautiful Riley is the first
thing in a long time that has made him feel better. That is, until Riley innocently chases
a horse.
Local law states that any animal that chases livestock must be put to sleep. Suddenly
William stands to lose another thing close to him. Together with his "totally
unsurpassed" friend Grace, William begins a campaign to reverse the county
commissioners' decision. But with a community divided on the issue, and the bully Ellis
Porter trying to stop them at every turn, will they be able to save Riley's life?

animals.
Cisco the High
Tailed Dog
This book was written
by Lillian Sikorski and was published in March 2002 by Tail It Like It Is
Publishing. Lillian Sikorski has been a professional dog trainer for over 20 years. She
specializes in teaching dogs and their owners how to achieve their goals through positive
reinforcement. Lillian is a long standing member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers
(APDT) and has been featured on local radio and television programs to discuss her
training techniques. Her love for dogs and the adventures that she has enjoyed with her
own Golden, Cisco, prompted her to share this story.
For as long as Niki could remember her dream was to have a Golden puppy that would become
a champion in the show ring. Her Cisco wastes no time teaching Niki that dogs need much
attention from their owners to reach their goals. After showing Cisco in the exhibition
ring at several dog shows and sharing many adventures with him, Niki discovers that dreams
can take different paths. Niki also learns that champions can come in many varieties, and
she was surprised how the unconditional love of a dog can change a person's view.

Golden Fever: A
Rollicking Romp With Everyone's Buddy, the Golden Retriever
This book was written by Bruce Cochran and was published in
September 2003 by Willow Creek Press. It's been said this would be a better world if
people were more like Golden Retrievers. Friendly, cheerful, self-assured, and just plain
loveable - these are the classic characteristics of Goldens. That's the upside. What
Golden owners won't tell you, but is hilariously revealed in this charming book of
humorous cartoons, is that these lovely dogs can also display hoodwinking deceit, annoying
persistence, blind jealousy, selfishness, flatulence and indolence. Of course, it's
because of these exasperating traits, if not in spite of them, that Goldens are so darn
endearing. All Golden owners will recognize themselves and their dogs in Bruce Cochran's
Golden Fever!

photos, the book records 100 true accounts of canine intuition, bravery & devotion
from across the country. Everyone loves a hero and everyone loves a dog. HERO DOGS unites
the two! Here is one of the Golden stories from this book:
Merle is a 65-pound Golden Retriever from Evansville, Indiana. One day when she was out
with her pet buddy Sam, she fell through the ice while chasing a stick. Terrified that his
dog was in trouble, 10-year-old Glenn "Sam" Henderson tried to save her. But, he
fell in as well. A neighbor heard his cries for help, luckily, and called the Perry
Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Witnesses credit Merle with saving Sam's life. "We've never had anything quite like
this. The whole time it looked like the dog was behind him, nudging him, keeping him up
and pushing him toward the ice," said Goeff L. Rupe, medical officer for the fire
department. "Once we got Sam into the boat, the only thing he said was, 'Get my
dog.'"
Unhurt despite this ice plunge, Merle swan to the shore, and waited on the bank while Sam
was rowed to safety. She continued pacing nervously waiting outside of the ambulance while
Sam was stripped, dried off, and wrapped in a blanket. Sam had to be rushed to Deaconess
Hospital so he could be treated for his hypothermia. Sam and Merle were reunited at home.
"We'll have to find a nice steak bone for Merle," said Sam's father. As for Sam,
Mr. Henderson said, "He can have whatever he wants to eat today but, much to his
dislike, he's got some homework to do."

Mcgrowl: Beware
Of Dog
This book was written by Bob
Balaban and was published in August 2002 by Scholastic. Film producer, director and actor
Balaban launches the McGrowl series with this faltering farce introducing fifth-grader
Thomas and his "best and only friend," Violet. Just after his birthday, on which
Thomas once again fails to receive the one present he wants a dog he and Violet find a
stray as they walk home during a thunder and lightning storm. The dog escorts the children
through blinding rain ("barking furiously, keeping them together and trying to move
them forward as if they were an errant flock of sheep"), and pushes them out of the
path of an oncoming truck, which then strikes the canine. In an odd twist, Thomas and
Violet deliver the pooch to a man whom they believe is a revered veterinarian, but is
actually a villain in disguise; after many pages readers learn that he is determined to
take over the town and plans to use Thomas's dog to carry out his plot. The evil vet
replaces the insides of McGrowl (as Thomas eventually names him) with steel and aluminum
during an operation he performs after the accident. Awkward writing, extraneous detail and
humor that misses its mark sink this shaggy dog story.
