We first saw Knuckles hiding under one of the cabins at our camp. She looked like a boxer pitt mix. It was September 2008. She was a skinny timid and a new mother. Where her pups were we never found out.
She was in such bad shape one of the other men in our group wanted to put her out of her misery. My wife insisted we needed to help her. She came to my wife without fear.
Knuckles was covered with ticks and fleas. She also had sores on her head and back. We brought her home gave her a bath and lots of love. She tested positive for heartworms. In order for her to be treated she had to gain weight. We had her spayed and treated for heartworms.
She has been a great addition to our brood, one yellow lab, a boykin spaniel and a boston terrier all rescue dogs. She is very protective of her mama and has made a good watch dog letting us know as soon as someone drives up our drive way.
Knuckles is afraid of large birds like the buzzards and hawks we have in our area.
We can only guess she may have been their next meal if it was not for her finding us.
