Our Queen Mary
by Barbara Walter

On a cold October evening, a tiny, seven pound shih-tzu was dumped. The sweet pup had several doors to choose from, but for some reason, was drawn to the home of Kim Henson, a Sun Valley Animal Shelter employee. The scratching on the wood prompted Kim to see what the noise was. She opened the door, and in walked Mary.
Mary had a broken jaw, was missing her right eye, and she had several puncture wounds around her neck from a dog bite. Kim looked after Mary that night, and brought her into the shelter the next day. She was cleaned up, shaved, and put on antibiotics immediately. After the vet visit, the shelter determined we would try to raise money for the surgeries that she would need to heal her.
As a non-profit, we have limited funds for medical expenses. But, there was something special about Mary and we felt compelled to help her.
Thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, we have been blessed with veterinarians who gave us a discount on her first surgery ($5,000), and the donations have been more than generous. We still have to have her eye treated, along with her teeth and getting her spayed, although she has gained weight and has the sweetest personality for someone so little.
We hope to find her a special home right around the holidays, she deserves to be treated like the Queen she is. Thank you for letting me share one story of our many animals with you.
