Pickle's Story
by Kristen Skillicorn

As you may know, Pit bulls are not portrayed very well in the media. However I have a story that may change any readers mind. I started out with an adoption of a dog whom I was told was a Boston Terrier cross, to my surprise she grew into a pit bull.
I guess her trip from the humane society to my house was very agreeable. But I digress, the point is after my first beloved pit bull mix and a job that encourages adoptions I would end up with three.
With multiple threats from my Fiancée that if we get another dog he would leave me, I came across that fourth one to test his boundaries. To say the least our wedding is going through and we are a happy four dog household. This is where Pickles story begins.
I came in one day to work and was greeted by two technicians from the Animal Emergency Care, which is never a good sign for my wallet. I hesitantly asked what they needed, of course there reply was can you come with us. As I walked into ICU there sitting in a kennel with oxygen tubes coming out of her nose was a spotted little thing.
Well my first instinct took in and said Run Kristen Run!! But instinct and action you well know is not one and the same. Well then I heard her story she was mine, She was about 22 months old and was dropped of at the emergency clinic barley alive. She had been stabbed multiple times and her throat slit. Two women had dropped her off and said there boyfriend had done this and then took off. (A side note to this is the perpetrator to this crime was never caught.)
Under the incredible care and surgical skills the doctors managed to save her life. She was stabilized and then needed to go into surgery to fix all the lacerations. When the Doctors deemed her stable enough her surgery commenced. She had multiple stabs into the diaphragm and a portion of her liver was cut loose. She ended up having one portion of her liver removed and everything else was fine considering.
Her recovery went well and despite looking like Franken puppy she pushed right through everything wonderfully. She only had to endure one more surgery after that and it was minor. She unfortunately was not handed the best genetics and would end up with a bad bite. This again I must say, I am blessed to work with some of the best specialist. Her bite was fixed and other then minor bumps and scrapes in the road I.E porcupine and skunks she is living a normal and happy life!!
Now most people would be concerned with her attitude towards humans, but let me tell you she would rather be on your lap or in your food then anything else. This little girl could not have made it if it was not for the caring people who took her in and saved her life and gave her a chance to be a puppy.
