Miss Dixie’s Story
by Sarah Whitfield

Every dog or cat has a special place in every owner’s heart, but my golden retriever along with her two feline sisters, are truly my furry kids. My girls bring me so much love and have transformed the direction of my career path as I plan to pursue a career in animal law.
My golden retriever, Miss Dixie, has brought my life to the awareness that people should always adopt because there are so many canines and felines without homes, and to the cruelty brought against animals.
I adopted Dixie nearly two years ago after I moved down to Atlanta and began fostering her. I got the call to pick up a senior golden about 20 minutes north of the city after a couple had dropped her off at the local humane society stating that they would like her euthanized because they were getting a divorce and she was nothing more than a nuance.
Dixie was shaking and crying the entire way home to my apartment. She was hesitant with humans and my three-legged felines (who were also adopted) for quite some time, but after a few weeks she settled in great to her new home and was officially no longer a foster dog but she had a new last name
Whitfield!
While I will never know what Dixie endured in her previous life, we do know that she faced neglect and was overfed constantly. The first time I gave her a toy, her eyes lit up like a child on Christmas morning and I knew then, she most likely had never known love.
Dixie has now long forgotten about her past and relishes in her new life with her two feline sisters, Lily and Daisy; new toys, and lots of love. She is such a special golden and will always hold a dear place in my heart.
