| "So many little girls love horses, and the glorious game
little colt, Afleet Alex, has paid back that affection. Alex
Scott was a wonderful little girl who had cancer. To help
raise research funds for her disease, she opened a
neighborhood lemonade stand.
Alas, Alex died when she was only eight years old, but
Alex Afleet's owners took up the cause of their colt's
namesake, and soon tracks across America began sporting
lemonade stands on the days when Afleet Alex raced. Afleet
Alex lost the Derby, but won the Preakness and the Belmont,
as the Alexes together won the hearts of the nation."
