Rags to Riches "Defeating Curlin" Print

With no Triple Crown winner, the racing industry needed something to awaken a sleeping media. That something came in June, with the running of the 2007 Belmont Stakes.

A small crowd of only 46,870 people had come to Belmont Park to see what they thought would be an uneventful third leg of the Triple Crown. To their surprise, they would see one of the most exciting finishes in Belmont history. They would see an amazing horse, Rags to Riches, become the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont Stakes.

On her way to achieving this feat, she had to overcome a number of obstacles: a near disastrous stumble out of the starting gate, running most of the mile and a half on the far outside, then finally battling Curlin, the big chestnut colt, eye to eye, right down to the wire.

Seabiscuit "An American Legend" Print

In 1938, near the end of a decade of monu- mental turmoil, the year's number-one news- maker was not Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Hitler, or Mussolini. It wasn't Pope Pius XI, nor was it Lou Gehrig, Howard Hughes, or Clarke Gable.

The subject of the most newspaper column inches in 1938 wasn't even a person. It was an undersized, crooked-legged racehorse named Seabiscuit.

In the latter half of the Depression, Seabiscuit was nothing short of a cultural icon in America,
enjoying adulation so intense and broadbased that is transcended sport. Laura Hillenbrand Seabiscuit, An American Legend

The Final Call "John Henry" (Laffit Pincay Up) Print

It won’t be long before the old warrior will hear the distant call to the post, a sound he had heard so long ago. He will come home now, one last time, to that familiar roar of the crowd and run his final race. In the early 80’s, there came a champion to represent the working class and the poor, disenfranchised people of this land. He was a small, older gelding named John Henry. He came from the wrong side of the tracks. A son of Old Bob Bowers, whose stud fee was only $2,500.00, John Henry captured the hearts and minds of the poor, as well as the rich, and the famous. And now he waits. He is fragile and looks even smaller, but, if you look closely, you might see the giant that once lived in that body. Fred Stone
