We believe that health issues arise from all of the
preservatives, sugars, heavy processing and harmful insecticides and chemical
fertilizers in foods. At the Land of PureGold we only carry those
treats that we would allow our own dogs to eat. Everything must be human-quality
and for proteins, organic or free-range. For that reason, the cost may

Did you know that historically, native
Alaskans used Salmon to feed their sled dogs, as it gave them essential protein,
vitamins and minerals? And, modern day dog mushers still feed salmon to their

Salmon Paws contains only human-grade Wild Alaskan Sockeye
Salmon caught in the pristine
waters of Alaska. Unlike many other salmon treat products out on the market

Many of the other salmon treats out there are made from farm raised salmon,
which contains lower levels of nutrients and higher levels of fat (this can also
cause loose stool). Many of them also contain bone and other unwanted

Besides being a great low fat protein source, Salmon Paws treats contain high
levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which you can
learn more about here. Omega-3's are essential to the
regulation of all biological functions, great for skin and coat health,
in addition to cardiovascular and joint health.
Two important Omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and
docosahexanoic acid (DHA), both found liberally in cold water fish such
as salmon. These fatty acids help reduce low density lipoproteins (LDLs),
raise levels of good high density lipoproteins (HDLs), and lower those
high triglyceride levels associated with heart disease. They also help
with he inflammation associated with arthritis.
The truly exciting part that we absolutely LOVE about this treat, and
what makes it so incredibly unique, is its
inclusion of Organic Broccoli, an ingredient that we use in our homemade canine
cancer organic diet. With more health benefits per bite than any vegetable, broccoli takes the
prize as the most nutritious vegetable around. It contains
large amounts of vitamin C and beta carotene, which are important antioxidants,
and is high in vitamins A and D.
Health organizations have singled out cruciferous vegetables such as
broccoli as must-have foods,
recommending we eat them several times a week. Why? They are linked to lower
rates of cancer. Like all cruciferous vegetables, broccoli naturally contains
two important phytochemicals: indoles and isothiocyanates. Researchers at
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine isolated from broccoli
an isothiocyanate, called sulforaphane, that increases the activity of a group
of enzymes in our bodies that squelch cancer-causing agents.
These phytochemicals block enzymes that activate carcinogens and boost enzymes
that detoxify them. Other antioxidant phytochemicals in these green cruciferous
veggies help prevent and repair DNA damage that can lead to cancer. They also
seem to interrupt the growth of cancer cells.
We love to break the salmon strips into smaller pieces to use as
training treats or just to be more responsible when treating our dogs.

What Makes Salmon Paws Unique
Salmon Paws is a family owned and operated business
that controls their own manufacturing plant in Bellingham, WA. Since
1994 they have been producing a human grade of Salmon jerky, now
expanding with a pet division. All of their Wild Salmon comes out of the
waters of Alaska. There are four types of Wild Salmon, most to least
expensive, being King, Sockeye, Pinks & Chums. Farmed Salmon, Atlantics
and Steelhead, are much too oily for our pets, tending to cause loose
stools. In addition, the meat typically around the belly on wild fish is
too oily for animals. That is why Salmon Paws uses the center cut from
the Sockeye Salmon, an area that is very lean and fee of bones. They
take this meat and put it through a silent cutter (large food processor)
to make it into a consistency to extrude into strips.
Most other pet treat manufacturers who use salmon in
their product must heat their salmon to very high temperatures to break
down the skin, bones, guts, head, etc. This method produces Ash which is
very bad for pets. Instead, Salmon Paws heats their product to only 170°
F, to extract only the moisture from the treat and kill any bacteria.
But, above all, they do not use such inferior parts of the fish in the
first place.
The only downside to this process
is that it is very costly. The salmon strips must stay in ovens for over
6 hours and the company can only produce 100lbs of product per one
12-hour shift. This is the case despite the plant being over 10,000
square feet and their utilizing a very large commercial oven. This is
actually why beef jerky and similar type products are so expensive. |
