Nina Ottosson started the Zoo Active Products AB in 1993, with
development and design of dog-activating toys and games for dogs and
dog-owners, which is to mentally activate the dog in a positive and
educational manner. The activity toys are used by dogs and their owners
in many countries. They are recommended by dog psychologists,
veterinarians, and dog-trainers.
Brain Exercises for Dogs: These toys will mentally stimulate your dog,
i.e. “brain exercises”, in a fun and creative way. The toys are also
easy to get out and use indoors and are specially developed to match the
dog’s natural movements and instincts.
Activating – Problem Solving: These toys are meant for the dog to work
with problem solving in different ways, by finding hidden dog snacks,
e.g., to lift blocks, push pieces, turn discs, push blocks, put blocks
inside something, etc.
All dogs need to use their head sometimes in order to keep healthy. Some
dogs need more brain activity than others. If dogs are not provided with
an outlet for their energy in the form of different types of activity or
other stimulation, they can sometimes find their own “activity” which we
as dog-owners often do not appreciate, like for instance chewing things
to pieces or being generally over-active. The activity toys are also
very good to use when the dog for various reasons can not move about
freely, e.g. when injured or limping etc.
Activating a dog can be anything from letting the dog do tracking in the
woods, teaching him/her different tricks, obedience training, or hiding
a snacks in a room and letting the dog find it. In the summer when the
weather is good and it is not raining, the dogs normally get more
stimulation. It is easier and more fun to be out and play and think of
activities with your dog. However, in the autumn and winter it can be
boring to be out when it is raining, snowing and windy. At the same time
it is often hard to vary the activities indoors and think of fun
activities that are entertaining, simple and stimulating. This inspired
Nina to develop dog-activating toys or party games for dogs and
dog-owners alike.
Learning & Contact: While the games are being used, dogs and their
owners get a chance to have more contact with each other. At the same
time there is a learning process of common everyday obedience during fun
and positive moments, like for instance: sit, lie down, stay, and wait
while you are hiding the snacks in the games. A search command can be
given to tell your dog to start looking. Commands such as stop, stay,
and back up can be taught for when your dog is too rough or is doing
things wrong. Fetch is used for lifting the blocks. The command of
finished can be used when you think your dog or the exercise is finished
and it is time for your dog to stop and relax. Inactivity is just as
important as activity, i.e., your dog has to learn to lie still and be
able to relax when you tell him/her to do so.
Brain exercises with these activity toys/games are suitable for all dogs
old and young, big and small. The activity time that fits most dogs is
approximately 15 minutes, with less time when working with puppies.

The Dog Worker Interactive Puzzle from Nina Ottosson is
perhaps her most versatile yet. It can be used three
different ways for varying skill levels.
It is definitely a game for the really active and smart
dog. The level of difficulty: from easy… to medium… to
really difficult…
Easy (Level 1)
― Setup: Set aside
the tophat pegs. They will not be used at this
level. Hide treats under each of the removable round
pegs and in each of the compartments below the
rotating center disc, then let your dog try to find
the treats.
Medium (Level 2) ―
Setup: Unscrew and remove the rotating disc. The
rotating disc will not be used at this level. Hide
treats under each of the round and sliding pegs.
Your dog must now lift and slide the pegs to find
his treats.
Difficult (Level 3)
― Setup: Using all
blocks and the rotating disc. Hide treats under each
of the pegs, both those that slide and those that
can be lifted, as well as in the compartments
underneath the rotating disc. The dog now has to
spin the rotating disc to the right position so that
peg after peg is exposed and can be pulled out,
thereby revealing the treats.
1. Let the dog watch when you hide treats underneath the
blocks. Start by putting treats underneath all blocks,
both those that slide and those that can be lifted, as
well as all compartments underneath the rotating disc.
2. The dog is supposed to spin the rotating disc to the
right position in order to expose and lift block after
block, and thereby find all the treats. Start by hiding
treats underneath one of the “free” blocks inside the
rotating disc, so the dog understands how to work with
the block. When you see that the dog understands how the
game works, you can place the blocks and the rotating
disc so the blocks are not free, and thereby make the
dog work harder to find the treats.…..

Now you can hide treats without showing your dog how
many you hide and where you hide them….
Tips…. If the dog tries to bite or chew on the
game, put your hand on it and stop the game. When the
dog calms down again, say “go ahead” and let him try
again. If the dog repeatedly wants to bite or chew the
game, try to teach him to instead work with his paws. If
the dog instead wants to pounce on the game and beat
excessively with his paws, you can try to teach him to
instead work with his nose, for example by putting the
game on a chair/stool that is tailored to your dog’s
size.
The idea … with Dog Worker is of course that you and
your dog will have an enjoyable and fun time together.
You show. Your dog watches, listens and learns.
Remember…. Do not let the dog chew on the game.
Play the game together with your dog, and do not leave
the dog unattended. The dog should not play with or chew
on the blocks or the game, please consider the risk of
